There are lots of reasons why we move home – you may need to make room for a new addition to the family, or perhaps you need to relocate due to a job move. Whatever the reason, moving home is expensive. Here are some ways to cut the cost of moving, and make the whole process less stressful too.
1. Clear out before you move
Removal companies are
expensive enough, so don’t pay to move things you no longer need. Well before
the moving date start clearing out. Go through each room in turn. Take in three
boxes, and divide your junk into ‘rubbish bin’, ‘give away’ and ‘sell’. Sell the
best things on eBay or at a car boot and you will help your moving budget go
even further.
2. Shop around for your solicitor
Conveyancing is another
big expense, so shop around. Use the internet to get quotes for the cost. Do ask
for personal recommendations too as sometimes speed and reliability is more
important than cost. Look for discounts too: you might get a reduction in fees
if you join a discount club like Babeecard that can give you a discount on your
Conveyancing fees.
3. Book your removal company as far in advance as you
can
Prices for house removals vary widely. Ask around for
recommendations and get at least three quotes. Again, the internet can help you
shop round for the best value. Check the removal company’s insurance policy and
what it covers. If you can be flexible about time of day and avoid peak times
for removals you will get a better deal. The
BabeeCard discount club offers discounts on the cost of a removal
company
4. Save on packaging materials
Sturdy cardboard boxes
cost money if you need a lot at short notice, but you can save in two ways if
you look out for boxes in advance. Check on Freecycle or Freegle as it is now
known, as people often offer removal boxes. Ask well in advance and not only can
you get the boxes you need for free, you will also be able to set aside time to
pack more for yourself, cutting the amount you need to pay to the removal firm.
5. Get cheaper utilities
Make the most of the fact that
you have to contact your utility providers and check out that you are getting a
good deal on electricity and gas. Search on utility price comparison sites to
see what is on offer, and tell your provider that you are switching to a better
deal as they may offer to match or better it.
